New Delhi, IANS. In a statement issued on Monday, the Union Home Ministry said that the Supreme Court, vide an order dated March 24, has fixed the deadline for claiming compensation announced by the National Disaster Management Authority to the families of those who died of COVID-19. According to the ministry, in case of death before March 20 due to Covid, the time limit of 60 days will be applicable from March 24 for claiming compensation. As per the directions of the Supreme Court, for any subsequent death, the time limit of 90 days from the date of death due to Kovid will be applicable. However, the earlier order shall remain in force for completion of claim processing and payment within 30 days from the date of receipt of claim.
The top court directed that in a very difficult case, when a claimant is unable to apply within the stipulated time frame, he can approach the Grievance Redressal Committee and make a claim through the committee, which will be considered on a case-by-case basis. |
If any matter is beyond the control of the committee, it can consider the matter on its merits. The Supreme Court has also directed that five per cent of the claim applications will be scrutinized on a random basis to minimize the possibility of bogus claims, the ministry said.
