The 21st Constitutional Amendment is being replaced by 20A, in which President Gotabaya Rajapaksa currently has unlimited powers. Earlier, the President was given more powers than the Parliament by repeal of the 19th Constitutional Amendment.


The Sri Lankan bureau has deferred the endorsement of the proposition for the 21st Constitutional Amendment by seven days because of fights by certain individuals from the decision party. Through this alteration, it is proposed to make the Parliament strong again by restricting the powers of the President. The draft of the proposed amendment in Sri Lanka was presented in the cabinet meeting on Monday. MP Charitha Herth told reporters, "It has been decided to approve the proposed amendments only after all the parties agree on the proposed amendments." A section of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Party (SLPP) is against the introduction of the 21st amendment without dealing with the economic crisis in the country. SLPP general secretary Sagar Kariyawasam said, “People are facing problems due to shortage of all essential commodities. We have to think of solving economic issues before taking a political solution.
