A law enforcement official said preliminary reports indicated 16 people were shot. The police are looking for a man wearing a gas mask and vest, the officer said. The violent episode raised fears about public safety, which hindered New York City's recovery from the COVID pandemic. A spokesman for the police department said the attack occurred during a Tuesday morning crowd at the 36th Street stop in Sunset Park.
